Overview
Take the lift up to the Bergstation at Mittagbahn or test your stamina by doing this as a complete out-and-back. The route is scenic with relatively wide paths and manageable grades.
Description
From the parking area, head west to find the
Mittagbahn Access trail that heads through a short section of forest and out into an open clearing. After a quick warm up, this links with the
Rodelbahn Berg bis Mittelstation fire road that winds up the mountain to the Bergstation and restaurant. When in doubt, follow signs for the Mittag--Bergstation and use the
Trail Run Project mobile app to keep track of where you are.
This climb makes up the elevation gain. There are a number of cows with bells that serve as great distractions from your burning quads, especially if it's cloudy and the terrific views are obscured.
From the Bergstation, continue onto
Trail 4 as it heads south to Bärenkopf after a short distance. From this vantage point, you can see the objective to the southwest.
The trail cuts along the edge of the woods on a ridgeline and begins to ascend, rather steeply at times, until it comes to a steep final push up a few switchbacks. Here, you'll find a ~20' ladder which can be used for those daring enough. Alternatively, continue on
Trail 4 as it cuts below the cliff face and look for the
Summit Spur on your left which cuts back toward the summit of Steineberg.
Enjoy the views from the summit and head back the way you came. Make sure to stop at the Bergstation restaurant and treat yourself to a cold beverage and warm meal. The maultasche soup is a dreamy cup of warm broth with dumplings that will have you smiling all the way back to the car.
