Description
Note that this is an out and back trail, not a loop. You can continue from the north peak to also visit the south peak.
This trail leaves the trailhead on the scant remains of an old logging road heading southwest. The trailhead is clearly marked, and there is a small parking area with room for 3-5 cars. Once you begin the ascent, the trail climbs rather briskly pretty much all the way to the peak. It does level out a bit just before the last ascent to the north peak.
The 360-degree views are awesome. There are the remains of an old fire tower strewn about at the top.
From the top of North Chilco you have the option to head back to your car, making this about a 5 mile route.

If you want to visit South Chilco Peak, you can continue onward along the ridge line, dropping to Chilco Saddle and then climb back up to S. Chilco which will include views of Hayden, Coeur d' Alene and other surrounding lakes.
Continuing further south past S. Chilco to the end of trail #14 will be roughly 7.5 miles. Mid to late summer the trip past S. Chilco is worth it if you enjoy huckleberries.
From the end of trail #14 turn around and head back making this out and back route a solid 15 miles with some of the best view in Northern Idaho.
