Starting at the northwest, this trail connects with the Mckeldin River Crossing South and the McKeldin View Trail, and heads southeast along an easy path tracing the Patapsco. The trail climbs a hill as it passes by Granite, and then levels out again until it passes under Woodstock Road. From here, the path climbs a ridge along the Patapsco and follows a series of cutbacks as it climbs and descends sections of the the ridge.

There are several trails branching off in this section, allowing access to the Lower Thru Trail, such as Bob and Double Trouble. Following a significant decline on the southeast section, the trail levels out and returns to the Patapsco River, eventually connecting with the Alberton Road Trail.
