Runner Notes
A sandy, but quick detour.
Description
From the mouth of Lower Muley Twist Canyon, take the user-made path as it continues south from the south bank of the canyon. A series of small creek crossings follow one after the other and a larger wash sits immediately before a sand-covered protrusion. Two more creek crossings proceed a split in the road-trace, where you'll follow the trail to the right to soon arrive at the Muley Tanks and the fairly reliable source of water they hold (needs treatment).
From the tanks, keep along the main path as it begins to circle to the west. The route gets indistinct here, but runners are headed for the closest point of a nearby long sandstone ramp. After scrambling to the top, the red "hamburger" formations can be seen perched above the surrounding white sandstone.
Once you've enjoyed the Hamburger Rocks and the tanks, return the way you came, and continue on to either the
Lower Muley Twist Canyon Trail or the
Halls Creek Drainage.
