Runner Notes
The narrow trail makes this a fun and adventurous run, without being overly strenuous.
Description
Once you've warmed up on the
Fountain Valley Trail, head south to pick up the Willow Creek Trail. This 1.5-mile loop offers a bit more of a challenge while continuing to showcase the best features of the
Fountain Valley Trail.
Whether you take the northern side of this loop first, and move clockwise, or head south first to move counter-clockwise, this loop has a lot to offer. The singletrack is narrower than some of the other trails in the area, but isn't rugged enough to deter use. The going is still pleasant, and you'll have incredible views the whole way. The trail meanders in an out of towering sandstone formations, offering views from both sides of the Dakota Hogback. Additionally, a more varied ecosystem provides trees and shrubs to admire, which lend color to the landscape. This loop is especially beautiful in the fall.
While you're out on this trail, you'll notice opportunities to branch off onto the
South Rim Trail, which provides access to other trails in the park. Whether you're seeking a longer journey or are content with this loop, you won't be disappointed.
