Runner Notes

The Desert Classic Trail provides runners with a fantastic opportunity to get out on a long-distance trail where they have a low chance of twisting an ankle or tripping on sharp rocks.

Description

Hop on the Desert Classic Trail for a great introduction to the types of trails in South Mountain Park. Complete with rough-and-rocky tread, numerous wash crossings, and enough elevation change to keep it interesting. This trail gives Phoenix-area runners the ability to get out and experience a beautiful and engaging setting without having to travel far from home.

From the Pima Canyon Parking Area, head south, keeping South Mountain on your right. Just after you leave the parking lot, you'll see the Desert Classic Trail departing from a map kiosk. Stay left as you go by the Marcos De Niza Trail and follow the signs as you continue around the mountain toward the TV towers.

Along the trail, plenty of washes and drainages add variety and fun to the run, without presenting too much challenge. Keep your eyes peeled for mountain bikers on the trail, as they have been known to love this trail for its relative ease compared to other bikeable trails in South Mountain Park. The west end terminates at the Telegraph Pass Trail.

A fine trail with few rocks but not much for views and parallels neighborhood development. Gets very busy on weekends. 6mi
