Description
The Cabra Loop Trail is Forest Service Trail #279 and can be taken in either direction. The western trailhead starts from Rendija Trail #297. Start at the Rendija Canyon Trailhead about 0.5 miles beyond the northern end of San Ildefonso Road in Los Alamos. Park in the large lot.
Follow the trail north down into the bottom of Rendija Canyon. Take a left (west) and travel up Rendija Canyon about a mile to the trailhead at the western end of Cabra Loop. This trail heads eastward up a hill. After traveling north about 0.6 miles, the trail reaches a saddle with good views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east.
Continue heading north another 0.7 miles to the junction with
Guaje Ridge Trail #285. The trail then heads east along a ridge for about 0.5 miles before heading south and dropping into Cabra Canyon. The eastern trailhead is at the intersection with
Pajarito Trail #286. Continue south (right) on Pajarito Trail about 0.6 miles to make your way back to the Rendija Canyon Trailhead and the parking lot.
