The loop shown has two closures along the northwestern areas: one closure due to erosion, and one closure due to nesting eagles. The alternate walk through the battle is still pleasant.

Some federal holidays the Fort Lee Trailhead is closed but you can still go the National Battlefield and start on Attack Road Trail.

Overview

This is a great 7-mile run that is mostly shaded on both sides, has good constant elevation gain and loss, and has plenty of turns to keep you focused on the trail. One exposed section is a tight singletrack with a view of Taylor Farm/the site of Fort Morton remains. There are a couple of wooden bridges that can get slippery when wet, and a few low spots that get muddy, but overall this is a great run.

Need to Know

A fee/permit is required to access Petersburg National Battlefield; cost vary from season to season. For the Fort Lee Trailhead, you'll need access to the installation, Driver's License, and proof of insurance to get on base.

Description

This multi-use trail starts at the Fort Lee Trailhead parking area (corner of Mahone and Adams). The trail is mostly on dirt with two road crossings and one section of singletrack. It is mostly wooded with a few bridge crossings. The runl starts on the Prince George Courthouse Trail before heading to Harrison Creek Trail to Encampment Trail to Poor Creek Trail to Friend Trail to Battery 7 Trail to Meade Station Trail and back to Prince George to finish out the run.
