Overview
This is a great trail for families to explore with children. There is some good wildlife viewing at the various stops on the trail. There are other trails at the Hassayampa River Preserve, but they are not as child friendly. The trail itself is hardened dirt, and meanders around the Palm Lake. Nearby is where the Hassayampa River flows above ground, and shows why a small flow of water is so important in the Sonoran Desert. Lots of hummingbirds, various other birds, and occasionally a grey fox can be seen.
Need to Know
Occasionally, there may be a cow or calf near the trail. This area is very popular for family portraits and senior portraits as well as a popular birding area. The trail can be noisy as it is very near US 60.
Description
Leaving the visitor center, you'll walk down the trail to a large sign. The Palm Lake Loop is to the left and is well-signed. Large cottonwood trees and palm trees surround this area, and a wide path will let you casually stroll around the lake. There are several areas with benches to stop and look for wildlife, and near the beginning and end of this loop trail, runners can enjoy a small picnic area located beneath lofty cottonwoods.
Flora & Fauna
Cottonwood, mesquites, and palm trees. Great blue heron, kingfisher, Mallard ducks, hummingbirds, grey fox, and the occasional skunk.
