Overview
A great loop option through Lake Houston State Park with opportunities to see wildlife and birds among the cypress swamps and dense forest. Head south on the
Peach Creek Loop Trail as it continues onto the
Ameri-Trail. Near Lake Isabel, use
5 Mile Rd to work your way back to the
Yaupon Trail and Nature Center parking area.
Runner Notes
Sections can be wet but this would make a terrific, scenic route for a longer loop.
Description
To access this route, head to the Nature Center trailhead and parking near the NW corner of the
Peach Creek Loop Trail. Start south onto the
Peach Creek Loop Trail. The tread is mostly hardpack that follows the banks of Peach and Caney Creeks. The trail winds through a few small cypress swamps and also has several 30-50 yard long sandy sections.
After just under a half mile, continue onto the
Ameri-Trail, which continues in the same way through a beautiful forest on the edge of an old swamp.
The
Ameri-Trail will eventually bend to the left (east) until it links up with
5 Mile Rd.
5 Mile Road is closed to vehicles for this southern portion and provides access to Lake Isabel. It will head back north toward to the
Yaupon Trail and the Nature Center parking area and the start of the loop.
Overall, this is a lovely loop, and though it is fairly long, there is little to no elevation to worry about.
