Overview

This is a combination of of two loops that are connected by a section of the White Oak Nature Trail. The run provides a nice route throughout the Newport News Park.

Need to Know

Bathrooms and water can be found at the Campground and Day Use Area only.

Runner Notes

Some of the trails feature roots, but none that will become too much of an obstacle.

Description

This loop is a sequenced combination of the Twin Forts Trail, the White Oak Nature Trail and the Wynn's Mill Loop Trail. These trails weave in and out of Civil War entrenchments from the Peninsular Campaign. Take a run through history while enjoying the wildlife and nature that Virginia has to offer.

The loop is shown starting at the beginning of the Twin Forts Loop off the Long Meadow Trail (.5 Mile). The Long Meadow Trail starts from the Bikeway Trail (Mile Marker 1 from the Campground). The loop can be started from various locations such as the E Loop Campground Connector (Site -184) or from two locations in the Day Use part of the park, Discovery Center - the Dam #1 Bridge Trail (short) or the Swamp Bridge Trail (longer).

Every trail intersection is well marked with signs stating the trail options and distances. If you want to add exterior loops and distance to the route you can add the Sycamore Creek Trail (.5 Mile) or the Swamp Fire Trail (.3 Mile). These trails will bring you out to the Bikeway Trail that straddles the running area to the NW. From there you can re-enter the designated running areas from one of four locations.

The trails are all relatively flat with only minor elevation changes. There are only water and restroom stations in the campground and day use areas. All water and food for the trails must be carried in.

The park is pet friendly, but they must be leashed at all times, and you must provide proof of Rabies Vaccination.
