Description

The Tomichi Route is the steepest of the South Rim's inner-canyon routes. The constant loose rock and full sun exposure make it a less popular option compared to the nearby Gunnison Route, except during colder months, when the extra sun helps keep the cold and ice at bay.

The route is best for surefooted runners who don't mind a steep and challenging scramble over a shifting tread. The navigating is relatively straightforward, and there aren't really any points of confusion. Just pay attention as you descend so you can make an informed exit. At the bottom, runners will find a small rocky edge along the river to explore or enjoy the sun and surging water. There are also two primitive campsites.

To head down Tomichi Route, obtain your Wilderness Permit and then run to post #13 on the Rim Rock Trail to begin the scree field descent to the river below.

Flora & Fauna

The waters of the Gunnison River are especially fine for fishing. A valid Colorado fishing license is required and there are specific regulations to fishing in the area. Find out more by visiting the NPS's fishing page.
