The trail to San Gabriel Peak can be very dangerous if there is snow or ice.

From Red Box on Angeles Crest Highway, turn onto Mt. Wilson-Red Box Road for 0.2 miles then turn right at a junction with paved Mount Disappointment Road #2N57 (unsigned). There are a limited number of parking spots near the gate 100' from the junction and more down near the intersection. The trail starts on the left just past the gate ascending a series of short switchbacks then entering an enchanting oak forest. There are some nice manzanita bushes along the path as it climbs steadily to rejoin the Mount Disappointment Fire Road.

To reach the peaks, turn left onto the paved road and in 0.2 mile it makes a sharp bend to the summit of Mt. Disappointment which has an electronic site. To reach San Gabriel Peak, continue straight east and follow a singletrack trail to a junction with the San Gabriel Peak Trail #12W24. Turn left and follow the steep trail to the summit.

You are rewarded with a spectacular view of Mount Baldy from the top. You are also looking down at the Mount Wilson Observatory.

Oaks and bigcone spruce offer shade along the trail. Very nice manzanita bushes.
