Foothills Park is open to Palo Alto residents from 8 am to sunset everyday. If you are not a resident, you can accompany a resident for the day. If you are on foot, you can access the park via the
Arastradero Creek Trail if you are following the Bay to
Ridge Trail.
Description
The
Coyote Trail is located in Foothills Park. If you are a resident of Palo Alto, you can park in the Oak Grove picnic area parking lot. If you access the park via the
Arastradero Creek Trail, the trail enters the park in the middle of the
Coyote Trail, so you can run to either end easily.
If leaving the Oak Grove picnic area parking lot, the trail climbs up the hill away from the road as it follows a series of curves up the hillside. The the trail is shaded at this point, making it a pleasant run even in the middle of the day. Around 0.3 miles, a trail cuts back uphill toward Madera Point (it's roughly 0.1 miles).
The
Coyote Trail continues to climb to one of its high points at 0.5 miles. From here, the trail descends into a field where it approaches a road. Here, the
Arastradero Creek Trail breaks off to the left and enters the Arastradero Preserve.
The
Coyote Trail continues as a singletrack dirt trail that climbs up the hillside and re-enters the woods. The trail dips briefly before leveling out as it winds along the hillside. Ferns, mushroom, and other plants that flourish in shaded, damp areas can be found in this section. The trail finally meets up with the
Panorama Trail, which you can follow or make your way back to your car via the track you followed.
