Runner Notes
The first mile and the last two miles are runnable, but the middle 2 miles involve much climbing and scrambling. Watch out for cacti in the first mile.
Description
This ~5 mile canyon route winds up a narrow deep canyon in Death Valley. It is accessed via the Hole in the Wall backcountry road. Park at the Hole in the Wall gap, then run 1 mile across the open desert towards the canyon mouth nearly due north. As you run through the canyon, you'll find numerous obstacles to climb over or around. This canyon involves climbing up small dry waterfalls (5-10' high) and a lot of scrambling over rocks.
You'll find a taller waterfall at the start of the route. To avoid needing to climb this, look for a foot path to your right as you enter into the trail that goes up and over the small bluff before dropping down into the canyon.
At mile 2, you'll find a 50' waterfall that you'll need to go around. You'll find the go-around on the left side climbing steeply up a wash.
The canyon ends after it opens up into a wide wash roughly 5 miles into the route.
