Runner Notes
This track is a great option if you are looking to avoid the crowds of Routeburn. The track is not quite as wide or well-maintained, but it is well worth the effort to get off the beaten path.
Description
The Sugarloaf Pass Track is a challenging track that departs from Routeburn Track and connects to the
Rockburn Track. The climb is tough, but the views are well worth the effort. The track starts in the shade of the dense beech woods and native bush of Routeburn Valley, but soon climbs to the alpine tussock and incredible views at Sugarloaf saddle. Be sure to stop and enjoy the 360-degree views of Routeburn Valley, Rockburn Valley, the Dart River Basin, and the surrounding peaks of Mt. Aspiring that open up around you.
An out-and-back to Sugarloaf saddle can make for a nice day run. For those looking for a longer outing or an overnight trip, continue onto the
Rockburn Track for a loop around to Lake Sylvan.
