Overview

This family family run is a great place to get outside to enjoy both the natural setting as well as some interesting mining history.

Description

Directions: From New Castle, VA: Follow VA 615 for 5 miles to VA 611 (Peaceful Valley Rd). Turn left. Go 1/2 mile and turn right on VA 685. Follow signs to Fenwick Mines Recreation Area.

Formerly an iron mining site in the 19th Century, the Fenwick Mines Recreation Area holds importance both as a historic area and as a wildlife observation area. The Fenwick Mines Recreation Area is a nice spot to have a picnic and to run one of the area's unique trails. The trails are wheelchair accessible and allow visitors to view a variety of wildlife. The site has a large picnic shelter, grills, toilets, and a fishing pond.

From the pavilion follow the cinder Fenwick Wetlands Trail through the woods, across the beaver habitat area, and around the pond until you reach the stream. You then head out on the Fenwick Nature Trail, following the path downstream until you reach the waterfall.
