Overview
With 12-plus miles of trail within minutes of downtown Roanoke, Mill Mountain Park offers runners a great variety of options for a run. This loop hits the highlights of the trail system for a nice, moderate loop.
Description
The Mill Mountain Park trail system offers incredible mountain biking and running options within 5 minutes of downtown Roanoke. The trails encompass the summit of Mill Mountain and the Roanoke Star.
The loop starts out on the
Star Trail briefly before connecting to
Monument Trail. From here, the trail climbs slightly before runners cross over to the
Ridgeline Trail which is an intermediate trail that runs along the ridge/spine of Mill Mountain.
From
Ridgeline Trail, a short run on
Mill Mountain Greenway will get you to
Big Sunny Trail which runs along the western edge of the park. Keep an eye open for a junction with the
Riser Trail where you'll want to take a left; continuing on the
Big Sunny Trail will dead end at a neighborhood.
Riser Trail is a short connector that will bring you back to
Ridgeline Trail. Run south, and eventually you'll cross over Mill Mountain Parkway to start on the Wood Thrush Trail. Wood Thrush Trail is a sweet singletrack trail which short climbs and long descents. The trail winds you through a lush wooded forest.
Wood Thrush Trail eventually ends back at a 3-way junction with the
Star Trail and
Star-Woodthrush Connector Trail. Take the
Star Trail to return back to the parking lot where you started.
