Description
The Sloans Crossing Pond Walk is a boardwalk that goes around Sloan's Crossing Pond providing you an opportunity to see birds, reptiles, and amphibians that call Mammoth Cave NP home. The parking lot is located along Highway 70 and there are several picnic tables where you can enjoy a snack or meal. The trail crosses the Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike and Hike Trail and comes to a junction.
If you continue straight ahead, there is a small platform that looks out over the pond where you may see various birds and other animals around the pond. If you turn to the left, the trail meanders through the woods close to the pond on a boardwalk. The trail passes a bench before it starts to curve around the pond. It curves around the pond and passes two more benches before crossing over an outlet where water exits the pond.
The trail approaches another platform that looks out over the pond and has a sign depicting and describing what is going on above and below the water. Highlighting how limited surface water is in the park due to its karst landscape, this is a great run to learn more about one the aquatic environments that exist in Mammoth Cave National Park.
