The Cascade Trail is a 1.0 mile trail that will take you from the bottom of the Poor Mountain Natural Preserve almost back up to the top of the preserve just off Route 694 or 12 O'clock Knob Rd. The Cascade Trail covers a series of switchbacks as it rises about 640 feet from its lowest point back up to the point where it connects with the Piratebush Loop Trail.

Poor Mountain Natural Area Preserve covers 925 acres and contains a globally rare shrub called Piratebush.
If you pay attention, you may be able to find the shrub along parts of the trail.

Poor Mountain Natural Area Preserve protects the world's largest population of Piratebush, a globally rare shrub, which is restricted to only a handful of sites in the mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. There is also an abundance of mountain laurel and wild blueberry.
