The bridge near the trailhead on the access road is not passable by vehicle. Park before the bridge in the clearing.
Description
The trail ascends the south ridge of Sugarloaf Mountain through hardwood forest. At about the half-way point, the forest type changes to softwood and the trail becomes steeper. Some rock scampering occurs at the summit.
The summit view is spectacular. Baxter Park with Katahdin, Traveler, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and the valleys of the East Branch of the Penobscot and Sebois Rivers are easily visible to the west. To the east is Upper and Lower Shin Pond along with Mount Chase.
