Description

The Cliff Dweller Trail is a challenging loop, following part of the Adventure Trail along Potato Run. Originally built as a hiking trail, the trail is now multi-use.

The trail begins at the Pioneer Shelter and crosses Potato Run Creek, which is usually dry. Follow along Potato Run and climb up, following along the steep-sided bank overlooking Potato Run Creek.

The Cliff Dweller Trail forks off to the left after a rugged climb, but local runners typically tie Cliff Dweller into a run up to the Ohio River Overlook Shelter (AKA Lloyd's Cabin), on The Adventure Hiking Trail Loop for a great view of the Ohio River, before returning to the trail intersection.

The descent from the intersection crosses a number of rocky ravines before dropping through the cedars. Use caution on the descent, as the trail drops off sharply over a rocky outcropping, followed by a hard left turn. The trail then follows along a rocky creek bed, climbing and descending another rocky outcropping before returning to the Potato Run crossing. Follow the trail up the hill, back to Pioneer Cabin.

Crossing Potato Run Creek on the Adventure Hiking Trail. The creek is pretty much always dry somehow. This crossing occurs after you drop in from the old forest road.

Hiking with my son — best hiking buddy ever. Final day on AHT. No water anywhere! Glad we packed and stashed all we needed.
