There is an area in the wetland where several logs are laid as a makeshift bridge. Not a big deal but noteworthy.

Park at the Lake Buteo parking lot where there are vault toilets. You can either start to the right and cross the dam or to the left where the trail is marked. There is one wooden bridge, and the trail goes from a lowland swampy area (off-trail) and higher bank. The trail runs along one of the park paved roads accessed from Hwy DD. On the west side of the lake, the trail meets up with Hawk Nest Trail at three spots. Otherwise, you can run the loop all the way over the dam next to the spillway.
