Overview
Run through the beautiful Australian bush while catching glimpses of magnificent views across Metropolitan Melbourne and the bay beyond. Pass the site of a plane crash some 80 years ago before reaching the old Doongalla Homestead site.
Need to Know
Bring your own drinking water as there is none available at the site.
Description
Starting from the parking area, follow the
Old Mountain Road to shortly make a left onto
Fireline Track. Follow
Fireline Track through rolling forested hills before catching the
Dacite Track on your left.
Dacite Track lasts for only a short while before using the
Rankin Track to dive down a steep hill to a connection with the
Camelia Track.
Camelia Track continues through more of the same forest and descending terrain until reaching one of the highlights of the run: Doongalla Homestead.
At the site, enjoy a snack in the picnic area while you investigate the remnants of an original bush homestead. When you're ready to continue, find the
Zig Zag Track to begin a steady climb through switchbacking terrain to another junction with the
Dacite Track and the trail's end into the
Kyeema Track.
Traversing rolling terrain yet again, the
Kyeema Track follows a leafy, pleasant path to the junction with
Trig Track and the final leg of the journey back to the car.
Flora & Fauna
Kangaroos, wallaby, koalas, kookaburras, and cockatoos all can be seen on this trail.
History & Background
The old Doongalla Homestead site marks the original spot where the homestead was destroyed in a bush fire in the 1930s.
