Description
This is an overlooked section of the Georgia Pinhoti Trail, a 100+ mile long-distance multiuse trail shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians and cooperatively maintained by all. If runed from south to north, this section starts at a large parking area with facilities. It begins as singletrack, climbing roughly 600 feet over the first 1.5 miles. The trail then joins a forest service road. The trail turns right, but left leads to a radio tower at High Point. However, the actual trail turns right and follows the service road for about 2 miles.
After this, the service road turns right off the ridge and the singletrack continues straight along the narrow ridgeline for the next 4 miles or so. There are 2 side trails to the left into Sloppy Floyd State Park. In winter there are beautiful views of the lakes of the state park.
Although this is by and large a ridgeline run, it is particularly flat and a couple of the climbs are a bit steeper especially toward the end of the singletrack. Overall the surface is not very rugged other than just a couple of rocky sections.
Once the singletrack ends, the trail turns right onto service road and makes an immediate rapid descent down the ridge, making a left to stay on the correct service road, well-marked. This then winds on down to a moderate-sized parking area without facilities right on US 27 at Mack White Gap.
