Description
At the end of
Lake Road, there is a short, steep hill to the right. Descend this a short distance to the Lower Ausable Lake Dam. To the right of the dam is a scenic wooden bridge that crosses the east branch of the Ausable River. Cross the bridge and run a short ways straight ahead, and to the right is the trailhead for the A.W. Weld Trail.
Follow the trail for about 300 yards to the
Rainbow Falls Trail junction. This short trail leads back to a well-shaded, beautiful waterfall.
From here, the trail is straightforward and easy to follow. However, it is steep, rocky, and there are loads of exposed roots that are tiresome to negotiate.
The trail eventually comes to a junction where you can turn south onto the
Sawteeth Trail to run to Sawteeth Peak. The A.W. Weld Trail turns to the north, heading to Pyramid Peak and then continuing onto a junction with the
Adirondack Range Trail and the Great Range route.
