Description
This trail starts from Forest Service Road 5005 (AKA the" Left Fork of Wolf Creek Road") and is 12.5 miles roundtrip. Runners should park at the first "
Wolf Creek Trail" directional sign about 1/2 mile before the start of the trail. This trail is not signed or marked, so use the
Trail Run Project mobile app for navigation. The trail was largely developed from cattle trails and lands grazed seasonally - please close gates and cross one wire fence carefully!
The first couple miles wind through flat, forested terrain followed by a 3 mile climb (8% average) to a ridge summit and commanding overlook of the Winthrop and the
Methow Valley. Largely consisting of cattle trails, the trail surface is mostly dirt, with a few rocky and ledge sections.
The next section (1.5 miles) continues to traverse the ridge at more moderate grades and is largely forested. It takes you to a scenic overlook that affords dramatic views of the Cascades and Mazama to the west, Rendezvous Basin and surrounding mountains to the north, and Winthrop/Sun Mountain Resort to the east.
From the overlook, cross a nice ledgy outcrop and small rocky section before re-entering dense forest. In 0.5 miles, you'll join your outbound route; turn left and enjoy the descent to your starting point.
