Overview

Little Lakes Valley is one of the easiest hikes that reaches alpine lakes and scenery of the Eastern Sierra. That's because the Mosquito Flat trailhead is already over 10,200 feet, so your car can do most of the climbing for you. In only 4 miles (one way) of gradual upward running, you get to see at least 6 lakes and climb a mountain pass with terrific views.

Need to Know

There are no parking permits required, but the trailhead parking lot fills fairly quickly on summer weekends. Wilderness permits are required for overnight backpacking, but no permits required for day hikes.

Runner Notes

A wonderful, if not a bit crowded, high altitude trail on which to train.

Description

From the parking lot at Mosquito Flat, start climbing on the trail in to the Little Lakes Valley. After 0.3 miles, you'll see the first lake and a sign noting entry into the John Muir Wilderness. From there you'll follow Rock Creek as it flows from lake to lake.

After about 3 miles, the trail splits (no sign!). Take the left to climb up to Morgan Pass. The closest peak to the pass is Mount Morgan, but many others can be seen from this vantage as well. After enjoying the views, descend back to the junction and turn left to run to beautiful Gem Lake.

Enjoy a peaceful and scenic setting at Gem Lake. Maybe go for a dip! When you're ready, retrace your steps through the valley back to the parking lot.

Flora & Fauna

Signs at the trailhead warn about bears, and these should be heeded. Bear canisters are required for overnight trips.
