Need to Know
Oil Well Flats is a singletrack trail system being built around old 4x4 and doubletrack roads.
Description
Access this trail off 5491A.
Trail starts out as a fairly easy meander through a candyland of high desert vegetation. In time, the path climbs up and out of a pinyon forest into a burn scar. The terrain is rockier throughout this section and the wind can whip through this area, as well as no cover from the sun. The Burn Scar is littered with cool rock outcroppings, scrub oak and cow patties. At the junction of T5940, stay to the Right. The trail turns into a DoubleTrack at this point with more cow patties. Eventually, you end up at the junction of
Fire Canyon Trail and
Island in the Sky Trail. If you have arrived here, it is on purpose. There is no parking at this junction. From here, you can make a loop on
Island in the Sky Trail and/or return the way you came.
Flora & Fauna
Wild Trukey, Black Tailed Jack Rabbit, Desert Lizard, Colorado Pinyon, Prickly Pear Cacti, Chollas, Scrub Oak, Claret Cup Cactus
