Description
Beware, this is also a popular trail with mountain bikes and motos.
The trail starts off climbing a section called Lower Faceplant; after this, continue straight onto the Chaos, continuing you climb with a couple short downhill sections. Top out at a fence line and and you'll begin descending; after a short time you'll come to a gravel road. Look across and you'll see a sign for Loop 3. Take Loop 3 to continue on. Once you come to the edge of the mesa looking East continue and look for little arrow signs on the junipers to direct you through. The trail briefly joins a 4x4 road then drops back on the mesa to the right after an obvious camping area with a firepit.
The rest of the run is a ledgey which you'll have to step down off of. The trail also works the hillside so you'll never go too far down before coming back up the hill just a bit. This section of trail changes from smooth to a bit more rugged with some climbing.
The trail eventually curves left and approaches a very steep and rutted section of rocky trail. Be careful here! After the steep hill, the trail traverses above a creek bed but heavy rains in 2014 have created a significant rain gutter in the center of the trail, so watch your footing. The trail then pops out to a 4x4 road. Go right here. After 100 yards, look right for an orange arrow directing you back onto the trail into a dry creek bed. Run through the creek bed until it pops out at another 4x4 road. Go right to head back to the BLM lot or left head towards more continuation of Loop 3 and the Gun Loop.
