DuPont State Recreational Forest is a very popular multiuse, bi-directional trail system, so be on the lookout for hikers, horses, and bikers. It is normally open in any weather although it can close in extended periods of freeze / thaw during the winter.
Description
Airstrip Trail is one of the best trails in Dupont Forest. The trail is a very well groomed singletrack through mixed hardwood forest with fun switchbacks and excellent sight lines. Expect some rocks and roots in a few spots. There are no very steep sections and the slope is generally all uphill or all downhill depending on your direction. (It goes downhill from the old airport to
Shelter Rock Trail.) The "Difficult" rating is for the narrow track, elevation change and some tight turns.
As mentioned before, this trail is fun downhill but is also a pretty easy climb back up to the Fawn Lake area. All the alternative routes up are steeper and/or longer.
