Description

The Cutchenmine Trail follows an old coal mine road along Short Creek. You can see numerous waterfowl, and perhaps even a bald eagle, from this trail as it winds along the base of Sand Mountain near Lake Guntersville. It is wider than a typical singletrack trail but not quite wide enough to be considered doubletrack. Except for a few roots and rocks which are usually avoidable, this trail is relatively smooth.

This trail begins on the south side of AL HWY 227 just past the Park Office and has a small pullout at the trailhead. A short connector across the road will take you up to the Tom Bevill Trail for access to other trails within Lake Guntersville State Park. From the south side of AL HWY 227, the trail descends from the road down to a bridge which crosses a side creek and then rolls along the lake for about a mile until it reaches another bridge. Another somewhat long climb with a few obstacles follows the second bridge, and the trail continues rolling along the lake. After 2.3 miles, the trail ends abruptly at creek which is usually dry in the summer.

Although the State of Alabama owns property along the lake to extend the trail all the way around back to AL HWY 227 on the other side of the Short Creek Bridge, as of the time of this writing (May 2013), the trail does not extend past the 2.3 miles mapped.
