This is suitable for experienced runners only. While navigable with some snow, ideal conditions for this route are when the snow has completely melted. This is an unmaintained route and therefore is not groomed following natural events.

This unmaintained route sees a lot of runner traffic. Please practice Leave No Trace principles, stick to the beaten path, and be conscious of the fragile mountain environment!

While it can be slow-moving through the boulder fields, otherwise this is a great, fast ascent.

Description

After about 3.0 miles up the trail on your way to Amphitheater Lake, this path to Delta Lake leaves the maintained trail. While traveling north to the boulder field at the beginning, there are many large fallen trees to overcome. The trail is well socialized and easy to find and follow when not covered with snow. The last ascent to the lake is through boulder fields, so some scrambling is required. Follow the cairns for the smoothest ascent and head for the grove of trees visible at the top of the crest, just below the foot of the Grand.

Bring bear spray! I have seen bears both times I've done this route.
