Description

This trail can be accessed at the Fort Bayard Cemetery. A small dirt parking area lot can be found near the entrance to the cemetery and a green Forest Service gate will indicate the location of the trailhead.

This trail is mainly doubletrack and is part of a historic network of trails that were important for the delivery of supplies to Fort Bayard back in the 1800's. The trail connects to the Big Tree Loop and can be used as an alternative access point to the Arenas Valley Trailhead. The trail can be taken all the way to Bear Canyon Road, which can be used to access the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) for further running in the Black Range or to gain access to Twin Sisters mountain peaks.

Once past the Big Tree Loop, the trail is less frequently used and you may encounter primitive conditions. Be on the lookout for horseback riders as this is a popular area for equestrian riding.
