Overview
Hop on the Blue Spring Loop to enjoy pleasant mixed forests and an interesting spring along the Conecuh Trail.
Description
The run starts at the parking area near Open Pond and quickly catches the
Conecuh South Loop Trail on the right before passing Buck and Ditch ponds. At the first junction, expect a marked fork in the trail allowing runners to choose the direction of the loop. The trail is well marked with white diamonds and well kept. In 2017, a few spots were flooded but easily passable. The forest is mostly pines and oaks. The undergrowth is pretty thick in most parts, which doesn't allow much wandering. The Forest Service was actively burning the undergrowth during 2017, so you may find that some areas around the trail are charred.
At the far-east end of the trail is Blue Spring. This is a small, clear spring that has a blue tint to it as you might imagine. There is a small single-person/group campground next to the spring. There's another fork in the trail before the bridge to Blue Spring that isn't well marked. We ended up following the river, which was nice actually, rather than the trail but had to utilize dirt roads to get back on track. Water is available at multiple spots along the loop.
Flora & Fauna
Mostly pines and oaks dominate this area. Numerous birds live around the lakes. No wildlife was seen along the trail, but there was evidence that it was around. Coyotes were heard overnight.
