The trailheads at both ends of the Charlie Buck/Baldy Peak Trail #918 may be closed due to snow between December and May. The highest section of Forest Road 2000-940 is also prone to closure due to falling trees and rocks which may not be cleared until early summer. If that is the case, park about a a mile down the road and walk up to the trailhead.
Description
With the closure of the lower trailhead for the
Mule Mountain Trail #919, the Charlie Buck/Baldy Peak Trail #918 became the Forest Service’s recommended way to access the Baldy Peak area and the upper reaches of the Mule Mountain and Mule Creek Trail System. The new trailhead for the now combined Charlie Buck and Baldy Peak Trails was established in 1994.
From the end of Forest Road 2000-940, the Charlie Buck/Baldy Peak Trail #918 proceeds very steeply uphill—gaining over 1,000 feet in just a mile—before leveling off on open grassy meadows on the west side of Baldy Peak. These open "balds" provide great views of the Upper Applegate Valley below and of the Siskiyou Crest on the horizon. You soon reach the saddle south of Baldy Peak and an unsigned junction with the
Mule Mountain Trail #919 coming up from the west. From here, a short trail can be followed for big views from the summit of Baldy Peak (4,645 feet).
From the saddle, the Charlie Buck/Baldy Peak Trail #918 continues south along the west side of the ridge to its end at Forest Road 2010-300. The upper end of the
Mule Creek Trail #920 is about 100 yards north along this road.
Cars can reach the south end of the Charlie Buck/Baldy Peak Trail #918 and the upper end of the
Mule Creek Trail #920 via gravel Forest Road 2010-300.
