Description
This is an easy trail close to Fort William. It does get a fair amount of traffic, but it is quite a beautiful run.
You'll drive out to the carpark/trailhead from the single-lane road. As soon as you get out of your car, you can hear the rushing water from the Water of Nevis in the ravine below. The first half of the trail is through Nevis Gorge. You can hear the river crashing below you on the rocks, but since this part of the run is forested, you'll have only occasional views of the river. There are a couple of tricky rocky areas to negotiate in this stretch, but nothing that can't be passed with a little care.
After about a half mile, the forest gives way to open pasture and the trail becomes easier beside the Water of Nevis. Soon, you'll get the first glimpse of the impressive Steall Falls.
Steall Falls is the third highest waterfall in Scotland at 105 m (345 ft). The path continues to a large bend in the river where there is the most impressive view of the falls. Several long distance hillwalking trails continue from this junction for more experienced runners.
