Description

The trail starts next to the information sign and BLM vault toilet. The trail quickly drops by a series of switchbacks on a very dry, sun-exposed hillside with tall coyote brush.

After crossing the stream, which is usually dry, the sun exposure is reduced with large trees, pine, oak, and dispersed shrubs. The trail wanders up the stream with a few unmarked Y’s to the left. This is about where Sweetwater Trail L1 ends. Continue on to Sweetwater Trail L2 for the good stuff!

Consider including this trail as part of a longer loop by returning on the quiet Coalinga county road, dropping down into the valley, and if you are fortunate, cross the Arizona bridge (ford the stream), then climb back to the start.

The campgrounds at the start and finish of the trail were recently constructed with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. Perhaps the trails (Sweetwater Trail L2 and Sweetwater Trail L3) were also constructed with ARRA funds since the surface is still settling with portions of the running surface that could use some restoration.
