The Florida Trail starts at the point where the paved Cross Seminole Trail crosses a bridge over Soldier Creek. The trail runs along the north bank of the creek until it intersects with the railway on the western edge of the Spring Hammock Preserve. The trail then crosses the creek over the railroad bridge and follows the rail line for a short distance before heading back into the woods. Once back in the woods, the trail wanders among the trees and passes several wild citrus trees. There are several splits in the trail through this section, but these are just spurs of the trail and rejoin each other after a short distance. The trail rejoins the Cross Seminole Trail at the southern boundary of the preserve.
