Starting from the Cowboy Camp parking area, head south along Bear Creek. Follow the trail through deep grass (I once bumped a herd of elk out of the grass just before dawn) as it crosses the creek near Craig Canyon. Continue south, across the flats and over a small saddle that drops into the lower part of Thompson Canyon. The trail then crosses a small drainage and intersects the 3 Ponds Trail.
