Description

The main part of the trail is an old dirt road that's chained off until snowmobile season. From the lot at the end of Three Springs Road, just head south down the path for 0.5 miles until you reach a clearing with an old shack and barn that are currently used to house equipment for land management. Some access to the barn area will allow you the chance to see dozens of sleeping bats.

On the south side of the clearing, the short Three Springs Spur Trail leads to a platform built over a large pond connected to the creek with benches perfect for picnics, fishing, or just enjoying nature. A rickety board across a feeding stream offers intrepid runners with waterproof shoes a general direction to go off trail.

From here, you can either head straight back or continue the loop to the west. This part of the run is far more interpretative. A definite path will wind along old stone fences, past a modern storage shed, and through a marked field route. However, there are numerous snowmobiling trails, deer paths, and connecting trails (many of which lead to private property) which you can explore at your leisure. If you stick to the main trail, you'll have an opportunity to sign the guest book at the end.

This is a swamp trail, and it can be wet. It's ill-advised to attempt this trail after a rain, particularly in spring, due to mosquitos. Northern Wisconsin can have a biblical amount of mosquitos. That's not hyperbole—in May they will swarm so densely it darkens the sky.
