Description
This is the loop used for the Griffith Park Marathon Relay. For the event, most people have 5 person teams and each person runs the ~5 mile course once. There are also people who individually run all 5 laps for a full distance marathon. Visit the race
website for more detailed info.
The loop itself is a nice training option, and this is a fun and challenging after-work sort of run. There is a good amount of elevation gain right off the start to get you warmed up. The first ~1.6 miles is uphill on mostly dirt fire roads. The course then flattens out for a bit and follows an old paved road. The final ~1.6 miles is downhill on dirt fire roads. The downhill at the end is rutted from water erosion.
The route mostly faces east and gets sun in the morning through mid-afternoon.
History & Background
The beginning of the run passes through the ruins of the Old LA Zoo.
