This trail enters the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness and the usual federal wilderness area regulations and restrictions apply here. Practice Leave No Trace (LNT) backcountry skills and ethics. Camp 100 feet from fragile areas; bury human waste at least 200 feet from water, trails, and campsites. This trail is usually closed by snow between November and May.

Description

The #423 trail links the Wyeth Trail #411 and the Gorton Creek Trail #408 to provide a connection between the Rainy Lake basin and the plateau capped by Green Point Mountain. It's particularly useful for supporting loop runs or backpacks in the Rainy Lake/North Lake and Herman Creek area.

The #423 heads southwest from its signed junction with the Wyeth Trail #411, passing the North Lake Spur leading to campsites at North Lake, and then, in about a mile, reaches a junction with the Rainy Lake Trail #423A. The #423A passes Rainy Lake to reach Forest Road 2820 at the Rainy Lake Campground. The #423 through the Rainy Lake basin is well worn and easy to follow, but occasionally becomes overgrown in spots. In early season, when there is still snow around, it can be easy to lose.

From its junction with the Rainy Lake Trail #423A, the #423 now turns to the west and starts a steady 0.5-mile climb to its end at a junction with the Green Point Ridge Trail #418 and the Gorton Creek Trail #408. The easiest access to the #423 (when Forest Road 2820 is open) is from the southern end of the Wyeth Trail #411 or the Rainy Lake Trail #423A.
