Need to Know
The trail is divided into three sections based on management:
1. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe manages 14.5 miles between Plummer and Harrison. This is part of the Tribe's reservation.
2. Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation manages the trail from Harrison to Mullan - the remaining 56.9 miles.
3. Together, both of the above, overlap to manage the section in Heyburn State Park
Description
The Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes is a 72-mile paved trail spanning a large section of the Idaho panhandle from Plummer to Mullan. This trail was made possible through the cooperation of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, the Union Pacific Railroad, the U.S. Government, and the Idaho State Government. The trail runs from Plummer through farmland and rolling hills to Lake Coeur d'Alene and then up the historic Silver Valley to Mullan along the Coeur d'Alene River.
Plummer to Indian Cliffs: 6.2 miles with two rest areas (Hntsaqaqn and Hnpetptqwe'n) both with restrooms and picnic area.
Indian Cliffs to Chatcolet: 1.3 miles with the lake on your right. Restroom at Chatcolet.
Chatcolet to Harrison: 7.8 miles starting with an epic lake crossing and more lakeshore views with three rest areas (Hndarep, Sqwe'mu'lmkhw, and Steamboat Landing) with restrooms at the first two and picnic areas at each.
Harrison to Springston: 3.1 miles with a rest area along Anderson Lake. Restroom in Springston.
Springston to Medimont: 7.4 miles with three more rest areas along the way (Cottonwood, Grey's Meadow, and Cave Lake). Restroom in Medimont.
Medimont to Black Rock Rd: 5.4 miles with a rest area and bathrooms (Lane) as you work your way up the river.
Black Rock Rd to Bull Run Lake: 2.3 miles. Restroom at Bull Run Lake.
Bull Run Lake to Cataldo: 8.5 miles with four more rest areas along the way (Cedar Grove, Dudley, River Bend, and Latour Creek)(Restroom at River bend only). Trail crosses under I-90.
Cataldo to Enaville: 5.1 miles with three more rest areas along the way (Pine Meadows, Gap Rock, and Backwater Bay). Restroom in Enaville. The trail stays with the river and crosses it leaving town.
Enaville to Pine Creek: 1.6 miles up the river and ducks back under I-90.
Pine Creek to Smelterville: 2.4 miles along the base of the mountains with great views of the local sewer lagoons.
Smelterville to Kellogg: 2.7 miles along mine tailings and more sewer treatment plants to and then through beautiful Kellogg City Park.
Kellogg to Elizabeth Park: 1.4 miles.
Elizabeth Park to Shont: 2.2 miles.
Shont to Osburn: 3.0 miles.
Osburn to Wallace: 4.2 miles with part of the trail running under I-90 for a while!
Wallace to Mullan: 6.8 miles with two more rest areas along the way (Restless Rapids and Golconda)(Restroom at Restless Rapids only).
Flora & Fauna
Wetlands - swamp type plants including water lilies, blue herons, red wing blackbirds, and more. Moose. Forests - beautiful mixed conifer forests.
