Overview

There are many trails that criss-cross the woods in Mohegan Park. This featured run makes a pleasant, short loop and is open all year.

Need to Know

This park has no parking fees. The trails can be a bit soggy the day after snow or rain, but they usually drain within a day.

Description

This loop starts at the southern end of the Center Parking Lot. You start out on the Blue Trail (marked with blue blazes) heading south. Once at the Lower Pond, the trail turns left along the earthen dam and becomes the Green Trail (now marked with green blazes). The trail turns north as it leaves the pond.

From the earthen dam, you re-enter the woods by crossing a red, wooden footbridge. Continue north as you run alongside old stone walls through dense woodlands. Off to the right (east), you may also see white-tailed deer. At an intersection with the Red Trail (marked with red blazes), stay straight. When the Red Trail turns southwest near the road, take Red Trail Connector right, cross the road, and head right on the Inner Paved Loop. This paved path follows the shore of Spaulding Pond back to the parking lot.

Spaulding Pond is the centerpiece of Mohegan Park. There are benches along the Inner Paved Loop for sitting and enjoying the views. There are playgrounds on both the east and west sides of the pond, and a boathouse on the west side. There is a swimming area on the northeast shore.

Flora & Fauna

White-tailed deer can be found on the trails and trout in Spaulding Lake. Lots of deciduous trees make for great fall foliage.

History & Background

This park is dedicated to the Mohegan people who originally inhabited the land before European settlement.
