Description
Access the trail either from the parking lot at Buehner Center or across the street from Oak Openings Lodge.
Look for the orange blazes and enter the trail through the woods, winding your way through some of the oldest stands of pine planted for erosion control. This makes for a fun history lesson of unintended consequences, as the pines blocked out the sun and caused the loss of many of the native plants. The park is in the process of removing these trees and are actively replanting the native species.
At about 0.5 miles, you'll come into the open and see some of the park's small dunes, and some of the wildflowers (when in season). Return back to the woods, which will lead back to your car, or use one of the cross trails to extend your run.
