Overview
The parking for the trailhead is a pullout just past the fire station (when driving from town). You then make your way northwest up the road to the trailhead. The first half of the trail is on old logging/fire roads, so it's a little deceiving. There are many off shoot roads so make sure that you take the correct ones (there are no signs).
Along the way up there are several great scenic views of the lake at the base of the trail. About half way up you'll see a sign along the right side of the road where the trail leads to a singletrack traditional foot trail. Along the way you'll see many wildflowers. The top of the mountain changes into a much more forested area, which is nice as there are many different types of terrain along the way. The summit of the trail is completely tree free, but is steep with loose rocks and dirt, so be careful. From the summit you have great views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Runner Notes
Loose footing and many down trees on the trail.
Description
The trail starts just a little up the road north of the turnout located right by the Kittitas County Fire Station. The first 0.5 of the trail is over logging/fire roads and is an easy warm up, although steep. The "running" portion of the trail is marked by a sign just off the road around as you round one of the bends. There are many down, burnt out trees over the trail that you either have to make your way around or over at times, but are easily managed.
Along the way, there are many wildflowers (at least in the spring), and great views of the lake below. At the top fifth of the trail you are in a forest with large and tall trees, which is a great contrast to the lower part of the trail. The summit of the mountain is a peak that juts out abruptly, is treeless, yielding amazing views. The footing up the summit is very steep and loose, so ensure that you have good, solid shoes.
