Best hiked July - October.

Overview

This is a respectable summit hike that gains nearly 4,000 feet of elevation, and rewards with stunning views of surrounding mountains including Big Four Mountain, Del Campo Peak, and Glacier Peak.

Need to Know

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking. Restrooms available at trailhead.

Description

The hike follows Mt. Dickerman Trail #710, starting from a trailhead on the Mountain Loop Highway. You'll start in a deep forest and climb gradually at first, but then take steep switchbacks for most of the way.

The switchbacks begin at 0.3 miles, climbing relentlessly before mellowing out at the 2-mile mark. Cross a creekbed, then climb some more. Eventually, you'll break out of the trees and into mountainside meadows where the views open up and wildflowers burst in summer.

At 2.4 miles, the trail turns east for the final mile-long push to the summit. You might expect to cross some snow here, so be prepared if hiking in early summer or fall. Blueberries line the path of this final section, too, slowing down many hikers. At the summit, enjoy views of countless North Cascades peaks in every direction. Watch out for Dickerman's sheer northern cliffs, especially if hiking with dogs or kids.
