The main gate on the Entry Road (Roxy Ann Road) is typically open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the spring and summer and closes at 5 p.m. in fall and winter. If this gate is closed, you may continue into the park without a vehicle. You may park along the Entry Road or at the electric substation as long as there is accessibility for maintenance vehicles and you are not blocking gates. Please be aware that quarry trucks use this road system.
Need to Know
Gate hours may vary depending on weather and maintenance needs. Many trails here become very muddy when wet and are closed at those (few) times. There is no potable water in the park, so be sure to bring plenty of your own.
The park is open all year but can be hot in the summer months - plan to run in the early morning or evening. There is also a LOT of poison oak (and some ticks) here and staying on the trails is the best way to avoid or minimize contact with these. If you let your dog off-leash, be prepared for a wash and tick check after your run.
Description
The
Equestrian Ridge Trail and the Equestrian Loop Trail are mainly old roads (there are some newly constructed sections too) that got re-purposed as horse trails. As such, runners (who are welcome to use these equestrian trails) should expect them to be wider, rougher, and less developed than the other singletrack trails in the park. Runners should also exhibit proper trail etiquette if they encounter horses on the loop.
The west end of the Equestrian Loop Trail is at an information kiosk on the
Loop Road near the Prescott Park Picnic Area. From there, it runs north past a junction with the
CCC Historic Trail, to one with the
Equestrian Ridge Trail, where it turns sharply to the east and swings around the east side of Roxy Ann. Immediately east of the peak, you'll divert from the old road to a trail that was newly built to stay within the park boundary. The east end of the trail is at another information kiosk on the
Loop Road, near a variation of the
Manzanita Trail.
