Description

The shortest and easiest route to the summit of Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, the tallest mountain in Mauritius at 828 meters. The trail starts right off of B102 Plaine Champagne Road, and is clearly marked with a painted rock. There is parking for only two small cars across the street. Otherwise you'll have to park at the overlook a thousand feet east and run along the road.

The trail descends a bit at first and can get extremely muddy. Some branches have been laid to help, but you can tell the trail has been slowly widened by people trying to avoid the mud. You won't get any views until about two-thrids of the way when you reach Piton Saint Denis. There you'll get a nice view southwest to Le Morne Brabant. Shortly after Piton Saint Denis the trail will get very steep. The smooth dirt can be slick making it difficult to get good grip. However, ropes have been added to the trail which help tremendously. Soon you'll be at the small summit and be rewarded with exceptional 360 degree views of the whole island.

Excellent views south from the summit. The prominent rock surrounded by reefs is Le Morne Brabant, and UNESCO site with a tragic history.

The trail can be exceedingly muddy, which unfortunately detracts from what could be great hike
